Post-Baccalaureate Program in Elementary Education

Students pursuing this program will complete elementary teacher certification requirements. Students wishing to pursue an endorsement in any area of special education, in addition to their teaching certificate, should see the master’s teacher certification and endorsement in special education program described under the Department of Special Education. Students wishing to be certified in any of the following areas have requirements that differ from the general programs listed below and must obtain additional information from the College of Education Office of Academic Services: art, music (vocal and instrumental), physical education, business, management, marketing and technology, and technology and design. Initial contact for all post-baccalaureate students should be with the College of Education Office of Academic Services.

Admission Requirements

  1. Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5. Applicants with less than a 2.5 GPA should contact the Second Bachelor’s Office located in the Undergraduate Advising and Career Development Center, 200 McKenny (734.487. 5497).

  2. Official score from the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills Test on file at Eastern Michigan University.

  3. Signed civil/criminal convictions statement.

  4. Personal statement and letter of recommendation.

  5. Compliance with all other admissions requirements.

Program Requirements
The student must:

  1. Have a review of previous course work performed by the College of Education Office of Academic Services, to determine those requirements already completed, both for the teaching subject major/minor and for certification.

  2. Successfully complete major/minor requirements for elementary education.

  3. Successfully complete required hours of fieldwork experience. Presently a minimum of 100 clock hours of field experience is required, including required practicum courses.

  4. Successfully complete professional elementary education course requirements.

  5. Successfully complete student teaching.

Exit Criteria

  1. Successful completion of all course work on program (designated minimum GPA overall, and in majors/minors).

  2. Successful completion of required student teaching.

  3. Successful completion of required subject area tests.

  4. Recent signed civil/criminal convictions statement.

  5. Current adult and child CPR and first aid certification.

Most courses required for post-baccalaureate certification are undergraduate courses (course numbers under 500). It is important to note that 600-level or higher courses may not be used on a program of study.

Program Requirements:

All elementary certification students must complete the requirements for the Liberal Arts Major for Elementary Education as well as the Professional Education Sequence. The elementary certification student must also choose a second major or two minors. The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) covering this certification are Elementary Certification tests #103 and # 104.

  • Integrated Elementary Science
  • Language Arts Group
  • Mathematics for Elementary Teaching
  • Reading
  • Social Studies Group

Approved Additional Minors in Elementary Education:

  • Integrated Elementary Science
  • Language Arts Group
  • Mathematics for Elementary Teaching
  • Reading

The student may not combine Language Arts and Reading minors. One of the minors can be in:

  • Early Childhood Education
  • French Language
  • German Language
  • Spanish Language
  • Teaching English as a Second Language

Professional Elementary Education Sequence

The following courses require formal admission to the Initial Teacher Preparation Program:

Phase I: Curriculum, Assessment, and the Social Context: 18 hours

Prerequisite: Completion of Pre-Admission Phase is required.

* These two courses must be taken together.
** EDPS 340  needs to be taken with or after CURR 304 .

Phase II: Content and Methods and Teaching: 18 hours

Prerequisite: Completion of Phase I is required.

* These two courses must be taken together.

Phase III: Capstone Experience: 9 hours

Prerequisite: Completion of Phase II is required.

  • EDUC 492 - Student Teaching 9 hrs
  • This course requires a formal application to be submitted 7-8 months prior to the Student Teaching semester.
