Graduate Certificate in Japanese for Business Practices (JPNB)


The Graduate Certificate in Japanese for Business Practices is an interdisciplinary program offered through the World Languages Department and the College of Business. This 12-credit-hour curriculum is designed to prepare students to communicate effectively in a multicultural environment by guiding students to the acquisition of Advanced Low Level (using ACTFL proficiency scales) or a Japanese language proficiency in various Japanese business situations and to familiarize students with how culture can affect business management. 

This program is intended for those who wish to improve their Japanese language and culture knowledge, proficiency and familiarity with Japanese business practices.

Program Admission


Applicants must:

  1. Demonstrate at least Intermediate Low Level of Japanese proficiency using the ACTFL’s Oral Proficiency Interview or Level 4 of the Japanese Proficiency Test developed by the Japan Foundation or equivalent.
  2. Conditional admission may be granted to candidates with deficiencies in Japanese proficiency. Such candidates must successfully complete deficiency courses including, but not limited to, JPNE 343 - Japanese Composition JPNE 344 - Japanese Conversation  and JPNE 444 - Advanced Japanese Conversation .
  3. Obtain departmental permission.
  4. Submit a statement of reasons for pursuing this certificate.
  5. Meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate School.
