Aviation Flight Technology [BS]

The Bachelor of Science in Aviation Flight Technology program is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level professional pilots in the aviation industry. Based on the aviation industry’s needs, the program encompasses a path that takes an individual from student pilot to certified flight instructor.

The degree includes several specialized courses that incorporate aviation business and management skills, safety, human factors, weather, aerodynamics, aviation law and regulations, and crew resource management. Students may also complete an FAA Aircraft Dispatch Certification component.

Note for International Students: The U.S. Federal Government does not allow the University to issue I-20s to students on F1 Visa for this program.

Program Admission

Requirements for Admission

Upon acceptance into EMU, students are coded as Aviation Flight - Intent. To be considered for admission, students must meet the following requirements and submit an application.

Additional Information

  • If the FAA Private Pilot Written Exam was completed before entering EMU, the student must present the official FAA Private Pilot Written Exam score as documentation of successfully passing the exam. Appropriate credit for AVFO 170 will be applied to the student’s academic transcript.
  • If the Private Pilot license was obtained before entering EMU, the student must present the FAA Private Pilot license. (Presenting the written exam score, as stated above, is not necessary.) Appropriate credit for AVFO 170, AVFO 175a, and AVFO 175b will apply to the student’s academic transcript.

Application Process

  1. Attend a mandatory meeting during exam week with the aviation faculty. These meetings will be held once a semester to discuss application procedures, program policies, program costs, and other topics pertinent to the completion of the aviation curriculum.
  2. Complete all of the requirements for admission that are listed above.
  3. Submit an application, with appropriate documentation, by October 1, February 1, or July 1. Application forms are available online at www.emich.edu/aviation, or from the Aviation, Program Coordinator.

Decision Notification Process

Students will be notified by my.emich email after the aviation faculty makes a decision. The program faculty will notify the student no later than three weeks before the start of the semester following the application.

Acceptance and Transfer of FAA Flight Ratings, Licenses, and Certificates

Policies for Acceptance and Transfer of FAA Flight Ratings, Licenses, and Certificates from Other Institutions

To maintain the integrity of the EMU flight major and for flight safety, EMU policies for transfer credits of FAA ground schools, flight licenses, certificates, and academic course work are as follows.

Acceptance of FAA Flight Ratings, Licenses, and Certificates - Normally, only the Private Pilot license, and corresponding ground school will be considered for transfer credit. However, each case will be evaluated on an individual basis. Transfer credit will be awarded only after a thorough oral exam and flight checkout. If the prospective student is found to be deficient, and after evaluation by the faculty and staff, the student must either take the prescribed courses or undergo remedial training to gain the required proficiency.

For EMU students currently accepted in the Aviation Program - Once enrolled at EMU, the Aviation Flight Program will not accept credit for any ground school or flight course (including the Private Pilot license) from any Fixed Base Operator (FBO) or flight school. Academic credit for aviation courses taken at other institutions will not be accepted into the EMU Aviation curriculum unless the Aviation Program Coordinator has granted prior written approval.

Retention Policy

In addition to the secondary admission requirements, students are required to:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.3 (C+) on a 4.0 scale. A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.3 will be placed on program probation for the next succeeding term (or two semesters if the student is a part-time student—defined as taking 11 credits or less). If the student fails to raise his or her cumulative GPA to 2.3 or higher with the grades earned during the probationary term(s), the student will be dismissed from the program.  Students may reapply for admission once their GPA is raised to 2.3 or higher.
  • A student who fails to earn a B grade or higher in any AVFO course will not be permitted to progress in the flight program.

General Education Requirements:

For specific requirements, see General Education  or view the General Education Worksheet [PDF] .

Critical Graduation Information

Each undergraduate student will be responsible for fulfilling the requirements (or their equivalents) of the Eastern Michigan University catalog in force at the time of their initial registration at a college or university or a subsequent catalog, including the one in effect at the time of their graduation.

In the event an undergraduate student does not complete the degree requirements within seven years of the date of their original registration at a college or university, the student may be required to have their credits re-evaluated by the academic department(s) of their major/minor in keeping with catalog requirements in force during the year of their graduation.

Minimum requirements for all bachelor’s degrees awarded by Eastern Michigan University

Some majors and minors require more than the minimum in one or more of the areas below; students are urged to consult this catalog for the requirements of their particular programs.

  • Earn a minimum total of 120 credit hours at the 100-level and above.
    • Courses numbered below 100 are not counted toward this degree requirement.
    • At most, eight credit hours of physical education (PEGN) activity courses are counted toward this requirement.
  • Meet the requirements of the General Education program (see information below), including completing a Writing Intensive (GEWI) course in the student’s major.
  • Earn a minimum of 60 credits from a four-year college or university; courses taken at community colleges cannot be used to meet this requirement (Some formal program-to-program articulation agreements modify this requirement. See specific agreements for details).
  • Earn a minimum of 30 credits from courses taken at EMU.
  • Complete 10 of the last 30 hours for the degree from courses taken at EMU.
  • Have a minimum of 30 unique credit hours in their major and 20 unique credit hours in their minor for a total of at least 50 unique credit hours between them. Some majors that require 50 or more hours themselves do not require a minor. A double major automatically satisfies the need for a minor unless one of the two majors requires a specific minor. Students should check the requirements of the selected major in the undergraduate catalog to see if a minor is required.
  • Earn no more than 60 credit hours in one subject area (prefix). Credits over the 60 maximum will not be counted toward the minimum of 120 credits required for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Earn the minimum number of credits in 300-level and above courses in each major and minor as specified below - these credits must be earned in distinct courses; that is, no course can be used to fulfill this requirement in more than one major or minor.
    • Earn a minimum of 6 credits in 300-level or higher courses at EMU in each minor
    • Earn a minimum of 9 credits in 300-level or higher courses at EMU in each major that requires a minor.
    • Earn a minimum of 15 credits in 300-level or higher courses at EMU in each major that does not require a minor
  • Transfer credit will be awarded for courses taken at colleges and universities that are accredited by one of the recognized regional accrediting bodies only if the courses are college-level (equated to 100-level or above at EMU) and the student earned a “C” (or 2.0 on a 4 point scale) or better. Transfer credit may be awarded on a case-by-case basis for college-level courses in which a “C” (2.0) or better was earned at institutions outside the U.S. or at non-accredited U.S. institutions; individual departments/schools conduct the internal review of such courses within EMU, and additional documentation may be required. Please note: EMU awards only credit for transferred courses; grades are not used to calculate an EMU GPA.
  • Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in courses taken at EMU to graduate. In addition, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 must be reached in each major and minor. Only courses a student takes at EMU and those applied to their major or minor are used to calculate their major and minor cumulative GPAs. (Note: some programs may require a higher GPA - check with your program advisor.)

General Education Requirements - EMU’s General Education Program requires students to choose from a menu of approved courses in several different areas; do not assume that other courses in the same department or similar names will fulfill these requirements. A detailed description of General Education requirements is available in the General Education  section of the catalog.

Students who transferred to EMU may have modified general education requirements based on Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) or articulation agreements; consult your academic advisor for additional information.
