What does the change to 120 credit hours mean?
Beginning in Fall 2022, all baccalaureate degree programs for all undergraduates (regardless of catalog year) will require a minimum of 120 credit hours for completion.
Will I benefit from a reduction to 120 credits?
Perhaps. While you do not need to switch to the 2022-2023 catalog to benefit from the credit reduction, individual programs may still require you to complete more than 120 total credit hours.
Remember, all courses required in your academic program (major(s), minor(s), general education) must be met. The 4-credit reduction will be reflected in your academic audit on or about October 1, 2022. Therefore, you need to run and view a new academic audit after that time to confirm your remaining requirements.
What do students need to do?
Students do not need to do anything to benefit from the reduction to 120 credit hours.
I am a transfer student. How does this change affect me?
Like all other students, transfer students will benefit from the reduction in total credit hours required. No adjustments were made to the minimum number of credit hours required to be taken at EMU to earn a baccalaureate degree.
Why did the university make this change?
The University is committed to offering students programs and an academic experience that allows them to complete their degrees in a timely manner. We are also committed to improving the overall student experience at Eastern Michigan University.
The change puts Eastern Michigan University on par with other national universities and colleges, like most peer institutions.
How many credit hours do I need to complete if graduating before Fall 2022?
The minimum credit requirement for graduating in Summer 2022 or earlier is 124 credit hours.
Will some degree programs require more than 120 credits hours?
Some degree programs will require more than 120 credit hours to graduate. The new policy establishes the minimum number of credits for an undergraduate degree.
Due to the nature of some majors and required supporting courses, some degrees cannot be completed within the 120-credit minimum.
