Piano Studies Placement for Musical Theatre
|
|
- Musical Theatre students should take the Piano Placement Exam on a Music and Dance Audition Day. However, students who have NO experience in playing the piano may elect to bypass this test and register for MUSC 151 Class Piano in the Winter semester of their first year to gain the necessary skills for proper piano placement.
- Recommend first taking MUSC 100 Music Theory Fundamentals in the Fall semester. This sequence will prepare students for MUED 251 Functional Piano required for the Musical Theatre [BA] .
- Note: Neither MUSC 151 nor MUSC 100 will count in the requirements for the Musical Theatre [BA] .
- Students who have SOME prior piano training or SIGNIFICANT piano experience (2-4 years before coming to EMU) should take the Piano Placement Exam on a Music and Dance Audition Day.
- Register for an exam slot. Based on those results, Musical Theatre students may advance and register for the piano course that challenges them appropriately.
- Note: For the Fall semester, there is a School of Music and Dance Audition Day on the day before classes begin, where students can take the Piano Placement Exam and be assigned the appropriate piano course. Students who wish to begin Piano studies in the Winter semester should target the November School of Music and Dance Audition Day.
- Note: For students who are not challenged appropriately by MUED 251 or MUED 252 , a great option is MUED 305 . Of course, you must be approved by the Piano Studies faculty to register for MUED 305.
- Regardless of which course is taken first, Musical Theatre students must take TWO (2) piano classes at or above the level of MUED 251.
