The EMU CP requires immunizations to complete the Supervised Practice Experiences (SPEs). You must submit proof you have received at least the first dose of all required series vaccinations (or provide a blood titer test result showing you are positive for immunity) to apply. Documentation must come directly from your healthcare provider. Retain originals and include copies in the Kira application system. You will need the originals to upload online if accepted into the CP.
If accepted, you will have to complete the series of vaccinations. We recommend continuing the dosing schedule for all series vaccines while you await word of acceptance to the program, as all vaccinations must be completed by August 1st to ensure you have immunity before beginning the program. Vaccination requirements are based on current CDC guidelines and SPE site requirements. For the recommended dosage schedule from the CDC, please go to Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule [PDF].
Healthcare sites will not accept a statement that you had these diseases in the past as proof of immunity. Noting that you had measles, mumps, chickenpox, etc. as a child with estimated dates or indicating that you are immune is not accepted - even if written by your physician. You must have a positive blood titer test showing proof of immunity. Ideally, the titer should include a numeric result and reference range.
REQUIRED VACCINES (or blood titer proof of positive immunity):
- Hepatitis A (2 doses)
- Hepatitis B (3 doses or 2 doses of HEPLISAV-B) - Upon completion of the series, a blood titer proof of immunity is required.
- Varicella - chickenpox (2 doses)
- DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis) (1 dose Tdap + booster every 10 years)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) (2 doses)
LOOKING AHEAD
A double TB skin test, the complete COVID-19 vaccine series + booster, and a healthcare physical are required before beginning the program. The program will provide a form to take to your healthcare provider for the physical. The physical must be scheduled between May 1st-August 1st before the program start. In the first Fall and second Fall of the program, an influenza vaccine is required. We advise scheduling this physical at the point of application to the program.
HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS
The program requires all CP students to carry personal health insurance; this is mandatory due to the legal affiliation agreements completed with Supervised Practice Experience sites. Students must provide proof of health insurance following acceptance before starting the first year and beginning the second year. Clear electronic scans of both sides of your insurance card will suffice as proof. If accepted into our program, you will receive instructions from the Clinical Coordinator on submitting this proof.
BACKGROUND CHECK AND DRUG TEST
Once admitted to the program, all CP students must register online in a third-party system and pay for a Background Check, 10-panel Drug Screen, and Health Portal/Document Manager. Directions on this will come from the Clinical Coordinator. The total cost is $95. If the residency search (part of the Background Check) includes a residency period in a foreign country, an additional cost may be required. These fees are subject to change. Results for a foreign country residency search may take three weeks or more to complete. Please be aware that some Supervised Practice Experience sites may require additional background checks, drug screening, and fingerprinting at various points in the CP. These expenses are often the student’s responsibility.
