ESSC 101 Introduction to Weather and Forecasting [GEKN]Students learn the scientific basis for using weather observations to make predictions of the future weather, the technology used to obtain weather observations and how these observations are presented for public information. Weather forecasting will focus on real-time local and significant weather impacts. Credit 4 hrs May not be repeated for additional credit Grade Mode Normal (A-F) Course Rotation Fall and Winter Prerequisites - Restriction by Major - Restriction by Class - Undergraduate standing ![]() Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - Students will be divided into several different groups throughout the semester to tackles a small part of each unit independently, These groups will be defined in the online discussion groups and will also determine groups within lab. Each student group will be required to discuss, through online threaded discussions, their topic with guided questions provided by the instructor. For example, in the first unit one group will discuss temperature, another group will discuss wind, etc. Once each group develops an expertise in their topic they will split up into different groups with student from other groups to teach each other about their topic and to analyze a set of problems assigned by the instructor. This activity is commonly called a jigsaw puzzle activity because each student will bring to each group a piece of the puzzle and will be required to analyze or solve problems that require multiple students' knowledge (multiple parts of the puzzle). Often these discussions will be extensions of the laboratory exercises. During lecture students will get an introduction to topics and discussion from the instructor on more difficult topics. The instructor will also discuss the student-led on-line discussions. Lecture time will also be used to assign groups and allow groups some time to get together in class, though most work of the groups is expected to be completed in laboratories and within on-line discussions.
