LITR 103 - All the World’s a Stage: An Intro to Drama | GEKH Reading and critical analysis of drama intended to deepen the student’s understanding and enjoyment of drama.
Credit 3 hrs Grade Mode Normal (A-F)
Drama, perhaps more than any other literary form, brings the written word to life. On stage, actors offer an audience an interpretation of a play. In writing, drama offers readers a chance to imagine themselves as other people and to examine the consequences of making choices in situations that might otherwise feel foreign. The result of reading drama thus can often be greater understanding of both oneself and others. Literature 103 is designed to cultivate students’ appreciation of dramatic literature by giving them a context to learn about the formal and historical features of different kinds of plays and theatrical texts. This class gives students terms important for the critical understanding of drama as an imaginative literary form. it also helps students analyze the plots, character and setting of drama not only as windows into the themes of the plays but as literary works that have impacted and influenced the on-going traditions of literature. Because the course focuses on different types of drama in historical contexts, students gain a nuanced understanding of the cultural meaning of drama and learn to interpret drama as a complex social practice meaningful as human art.
