Social scientists have estimated that 60-70% of what we communicate to one another is through the nonverbal channel. Nonverbal communication is the primary mode of expressing emotion, creating and managing impressions and communicating messages of attraction, liking, distance and dominance. This course is designed to introduce students to the social scientific study and analysis of nonverbal communication. For this reason, the emphasis of COMM 226 is on scientific knowledge rather than anecdotal experience. The course will cover both classic and current theories and research related to nonverbal communication. From Darwin’s seminal work on the study of emotional expression in humans to current methods of conversational analysis, the field of nonverbal communication has a long history of research from a social scientific perspective.
