An introduction to major trends in recent art, with an emphasis on innovative forms of visual expression and their relationship to cultural, political and technological transformations in contemporary society.

Rationale for Perspectives on a Diverse World - This course examines the relationships between artistic change and social change in the United States since the 1950s and 1960s. The course introduces students to the work of recent artists reflecting a range of cultural identities. It invites students to explore the values and points of view expressed in contemporary works of art and to recognize and articulate their responses to and perspectives on those works. It teaches students to understand contemporary art in relation to transformations within the social and economic systems of art and in relation to broader processes of contestation and social change. In these ways, the course meets the learning outcomes for the GEUS (U.S. Diversity) requirement in the General Education program.
