Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Through careful, objective analysis, free from emotional judgments about what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong,’ linguists seek to understand the nature of human language, its structure, its development over time, and its use in social contexts. Since linguistics involves careful analytic methods, and since it focusses on language, which is a, if not the, central characteristic of all humans the world over, LING 201 is the perfect General Education course for Social Science, teaching students to think critically and communicate effectively about the many diverse properties and aspects of language. All humans have language; indeed, possessing language may well be the essence of what it is to be human. In all cultures throughout the world, language is used as a primary mode of thinking and as an essential tool in communicating thoughts, plans, and aspirations to others. The scientific investigation of the nature and use of languages, their similarities and their differences, will allow students to make more informed decisions about a range of fundamental global issues, from politics to science, from social justice to education. As such, LING 201 fully meets the requirements for the General Education Program : Knowledge of the Discipline: Social Science . Students taking LING 201 gain valuable skills in analyzing all aspects of language, and gain awareness of its essential role in human interaction. It offers useful perspectives on a wide range of disciplines, including medicine and law, business, education, philosophy, and psychology. LING 201 offers an understanding of language that is vital for virtually any profession.
