WGST 265 Communication and the LGBTQ+ Community [GEUS]


Communication and the LGBTQ+ Community examines communication about and within diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Aromantic, Polysexual, Pansexual, and Two-Spirit identity communities. Patterns in social movement, issue advocacy, group identity expression, and media representation are reviewed and evaluated. The course explores questions of intolerance, stereotyping, and intersectionality by applying perspectives drawn from communication and queer theories.

Rationale for Perspectives on a Diverse World - The course meets the outcomes for a course listed in the U.S. Diversity category of the General Education program. During this course, you will explore your own cultural identity as it relates to gender and /or sexuality and the ways differences affect views, values, and communication within and between groups; learn about the extent to which social intolerance and institutional exclusion based on sexual identity are evident in U.S. society as well as the consequences of such intolerance; and, finally, understand how diverse experiences based on sexual identity impact class, gender, and opportunity in our democratic society.
