ARTS 115 Sculpture for non-majors [GEKA]

The goal of this course is to develop skills in the use and manipulation of three-dimensional space and material manipulation and fabrication. This course exposes students to the many different materials and techniques used to explore the function and form of objects in space. We will learn fabrication methods and investigate how you respond to the formal or plastic qualities of various materials.  We will further develop your ability to conceptualize and verbalize visual concerns and exercise critical judgment in an open forum. This course will also look at historical contexts, both past and present, as influences on individual concepts, content, and expression.

Credit 3 hrs May be repeated for additional credit (provided topics are different), total credits not to exceed 6 hrs
Grade Mode Normal (A-F) Course Rotation

Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - This introductory course will familiarize students with traditional and contemporary sculptural techniques (clay modeling, mold-making, casting, and material fabrication with wood and light metal) while introducing them to an expansive art vocabulary within a historical context. Course assignments stress sketching and the design process, the fundamentals of design, and the use of sculptural processes and materials. By introducing students to the basic language of sculpture, through hands-on studio experiences in which students use this material language to produce their own objects and express their own ideas, this course meets the outcomes for a Knowledge of the Disciplines - Arts  (GEKA) course in the General Education Program .
