PAS 710c General Surgery Clinical Rotation


The General Surgery clinical rotation stresses care of the general surgical patient and is an introduction to the role of the General Surgeon. This course is designed to provide the student with the basic skills necessary to build a solid foundation for evaluating, documenting, diagnosing, and treating general surgical problems seen in a hospital setting and to become familiar with various healthcare providers’ roles in a hospital operating room. This course will provide the primary care trained PA student with an understanding of when to seek general surgical consultation. The student will develop basic procedural skills and proficiency in pre/post-operative care of the general surgical patient. Additionally, the student will be expected to develop the necessary skills and decorum to function as part of the intraoperative surgical team. The primary learning methods will be participation in direct general surgery care, observation, case presentations, and interaction with the clinical preceptor and other healthcare professionals. The student is responsible for reading assigned by the preceptor. Students will be primarily supervised by practicing physicians whom are specialty board certified in their area of instruction and/or PA-Cs teamed with the aforementioned physicians.
