HIST 506 Europe and the Crusades This class will focus upon the four crusades that took place between 1096 and 1204. Crusaders in this period seized Jerusalem from the Muslims and established the crusading kingdoms in the Middle East. We will examine the motivations of the crusaders in each of these crusades, and get a sense of the religious, political, social, and economic elements that produced the crusades. We will study the major military engagements of each of these crusades, and gain a sense of the leadership abilities of such figures as, Richard the Lionheart and Saladin. Finally, we will trace the chain of events that led the members of the fourth crusade to sack the city of Constantinople—one of the richest and oldest Christian cities in the west.
