SFCE 580 Sociology of Education

This course introduces various social theoretical perspectives to analyze the relation of schooling and other sites of education to the production of inequality across and between categories of race, class, gender and sexual orientation, and dis/ability.  While attention is placed on teachers’ responsibilities and skills as classroom practitioners, child advocates, and community leaders in a culturally diverse democratic society, the course also addresses how culture more generally acts as an educational force in various sites and across domains in society.
