THRC 160 Adapted Aquatics


This course introduces adapted aquatics, focusing on swimming techniques and programs tailored for individuals with diverse abilities, including cognitive and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and aging adults. Students will explore aquatic fitness, adaptive and integrative lessons in private and group settings, and aquatic therapy principles. The course includes an overview of how swim programs are developed, exposure to adaptive equipment, water safety awareness, hands-on experience with real clients, and practice in documentation and program evaluation.

Additional Information - Students must know basic swimming skills (e.g., forward stroke, back float, and treading water). The instructor is willing to work within the students’ skill set as long as they are comfortable in and around water, can maintain body control, and are comfortable going underwater. A lifeguard is always present
