ARTS 108 Furniture Design for Non-Majors [GEKA]


This course will focus on the basic principles of furniture design and construction. Topics and techniques may vary; these may include, but are not limited to, joinery, turning, bending, veneering, design aesthetics, finishing, and production.

Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - Students taking this course will learn the fundamentals of furniture design and construction. Course content will include methods for connecting wood, drafting, ergonomics, composition, plus historical and contemporary practices. Inclusion of this course aligns with required outcomes.  It provides the skills to create a furniture object, from initial concept to completed project and addresses terminology, introduction to tools and machines, characteristics of wood, and how each affects aesthetics and function.  Creative and critical thinking is employed through the semester as well as discussion of form and content.  Critiques address progress and aptitude.  Lectures include the history of furniture, design movements, and global influences.  ARTS 108 fits into the Knowledge of the Disciplines (Arts) category, as a 3D visual arts course that addresses ideation, technical mastery of tools/machines, material study, ergonomics, aesthetics, fabrication techniques, historical influences, and critical investigation.
