Objectives
This program provides advanced, individualized work in creative writing and contemporary studies. It prepares writers to continue their creative work and to teach creative writing, English, humanities or contemporary studies.
Applicants must submit a portfolio of their creative writing and meet the general requirements for admission to the graduate program in English language and literature. The portfolio may replace part of the 24 hours of undergraduate course work in English.

The M.A. in Creative Writing requires 30 hours of course work to be distributed among required courses, restricted elective courses and cognate courses as follows: Master of Arts in Creative Writing
Required Courses: 18 hours
Nine hours from the following:
Elective Courses: 12 hours
Literature Courses: 6 hours
Select six hours from the following in consultation with an advisor: Cognate Courses: 6 hours
Six hours selected in consultation with the graduate coordinator. Courses from any area of contemporary studies — art, foreign language literature, music, history, philosophy, etc. Undergraduate Courses for Graduate Credit: English Language and Literature
The following courses may be elected for graduate credit. A maximum of nine hours of approved 400-level course work may be permitted in the earning of any graduate degree. If you intend to enroll in any of the following undergraduate courses for graduate credit, you must submit a request form to the Graduate School to receive permission before enrolling in the course; otherwise, you will receive undergraduate credit. |
