The M.S. in Historic Preservation is an applied degree that requires a minimum of 36 credit hours of graduate course work. Its mission is to focus upon career development in the several concentration areas with the aim of preparing students for gainful employment in the field of historic preservation in the public and private sector. There are three basic concentrations available in the Historic Preservation Program. Courses are distributed among prerequisites, core, concentration, and elective courses.

Admission Requirements:
Applicants must:
- Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;
- Meet Graduate School admission requirements;
- Have attained at least a 2.75 grade point average in the major field during the last two undergraduate years;
- Personal Statement; and
- two letters of recommendation.

Degree Requirements:
- Selection, in consultation with the program advisor, of a course of study in historic preservation.
- Completion of 36 hours of approved graduate-level course work beyond the bachelor’s degree as described below under course requirements.
- Completion of prerequisite courses. The number of hours and the specific courses will be stipulated by the program advisor according to the student’s prior course work.

Students must complete course work in each of the following foundation areas or have acceptable undergraduate equivalent:

Degree Requirements: 36 hours
Courses are distributed among prerequisites, core, required, and restricted elective courses as follows:
Core Courses: 14-17 hours
All students will need to complete the following course work: Concentrations: 19-22 hours
Preservation Planning and Administration Concentration:
Specific Prerequisites:
Choose one course from the following:
Required Courses: 17 hours
Restricted Elective Courses: 2-5 hours
Recordation, Documentation and Digital Heritage Concentration:
Required Courses: 17 hours
Restricted Elective Courses: 3-6 hours
Courses selected with advisor approval Interpretation, Cultural Tourism, and Museum Practice Concentration:
Required Courses: 16 hours
Restricted Elective Courses: 3-6 hours
