Graduate Certificate in Medical Economics (CMECN)

This program will prepare students to:

Understand the application of economic principles to medical care issues.
Understand the role of economic forces underlying the transformation of the medical care system.
Explain the economic aspects and implications of contractual relationships between patients, providers, and insurers.
Evaluate the quality, effectiveness, and cost of medical care.
Understand the economic structure of the health care industry and how it affects the financing and delivery of medical care.

Program Admission

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Complete a Graduate Application
Submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities (EMU alums do no need to request official transcripts).
Earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution.
A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program.

International Transcripts - Post-secondary transcripts from a non-U.S. institution must be submitted directly to one of four approved evaluation services for a detailed, course by course report. See International Admission Checklist for additional information. Applicants should allow 2-6 weeks for the evaluation to be completed.

Degree Requirements: 15 hours

Except for ECON 500, credits earned in this certificate program may subsequently be counted toward the Master of Arts in Health Economics (ECNH) .

Required Courses: 9 hours

Students must complete the following required courses with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

ECON 500 - Foundations of Economics Analysis 3 hrs
ECON 502 - Microeconomic Theory and Policy 3 hrs
ECON 530 - Health Economic Analysis 3 hrs
For students who have taken ECON 201 and ECON 202 or equivalent courses, ECON 500 is waived. In this case, the student would select an additional elective course.

Elective Courses: 6 hours

Choose six hours from the following
ECON 514 - Econometric Analysis 3 hrs
ECON 520 - Analytic Labor Economics 3 hrs
ECON 536 - Advanced Health Economics 3 hrs
ECON 555 - Cost-Benefit Analysis Theory and Practice 3 hrs
Only one course from the following may be used toward this requirement
HLAD 510 - Healthcare Organizations 3 hrs
HLAD 511 - Health Law 3 hrs
HLAD 512 - Health Insurance 3 hrs
HLAD 576 - Informatics in Healthcare Management 3 hrs
