Master of Arts in Theatre Arts (TAG)


This program combines academic course work with practical production experience and is designed to balance theoretical and applied approaches to theatre both as art form and cultural institution. It is the goal of this program to enhance each student’s further pursuit of the arts and crafts of theatre for careers in professional and/or educational theatre settings and/or advanced and scholarly/creative study.

Program Admission


Applicant must:

  1. Meet the admission requirements for the Graduate School and be accepted into the program by the school;
  2. Have at least a minor or the equivalent in communication, theatre arts, or drama/theatre for the young;
  3. Have a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or 3.0 in the last half of undergraduate work; and
  4. In the case of international students, have a minimum TOEFL score (see the International Admissions website for minimum scores).

International Transcripts - Post-secondary transcripts from a non-U.S. institution must be submitted directly to one of four approved evaluation services for a detailed, course by course report. See International Admission Checklist for additional information. Applicants should allow 2-6 weeks for the evaluation to be completed.

Program Requirements


Students must:

  1. Early in their graduate work, prepare an official program of study in consultation with an assigned graduate advisor and file it with the Graduate School;
  2. Successfully meet all conditions stipulated upon entry into the program; and
  3. Complete, with an overall GPA of at least 3.0, a minimum of 30 hours of approved coursework as identified in the official Program of Study.

Degree Requirements: 30 hours


All Master of Arts in Theatre Arts programs require the completion of 30 hours of course work to be distributed among required courses and elective courses as follows:

Elective Courses: 12-15 hours


Additional courses selected in consultation with an academic advisor based upon the student’s individual needs.
