Quantitative reasoning skills are required in almost every major and professional program, as well as in personal and professional life. Students need quantitative literacy to function in society. Common examples include managing one’s own finances (e.g., credit card debt), reading and understanding the newspaper, and informed voting.

Please answer the questions below to determine Quantitative Reasoning eligibility.

Do you have an ACT math sub-score of 19 or below or an SAT math sub-score of 520 or below?

If yes, take MATH 097  or MATH 098  in preparation for the Quantitative Reasoning course. Course selections will depend on a student’s major/minor. It is highly recommended that students select the course sequence in coordination with their academic advisor.

• After earning a minimum grade of “C” in MATH 097 or MATH 098, students are eligible to take MATH 110 - Mathematical Reasoning [GEQR] .
• After earning a minimum grade of “C” in MATH 098, students are eligible to take MATH 110E  (Elementary Education majors only) or MATH 104 . ​MATH 104 cannot be used to satisfy Quantitative Reasoning, a student must also complete an approved Quantitative Reasoning course (course list).

A minimum grade of “C” must be earned in the Quantitative Reasoning course to satisfy the requirement. MATH 097 and MATH 098 DO NOT count toward the minimum 124 hours required for graduation.

Do you have an ACT math sub-score between 19-22 or an SAT math sub-score between 520-570?

If yes, you are eligible to take one of the following MATH 110 , MATH 110E , or MATH 104 . MATH 104 cannot be used to satisfy Quantitative Reasoning, a student must also complete an approved Quantitative Reasoning course (course list).

Course selection will depend on a student’s major/minor. It is highly recommended that students select the course sequence in coordination with an academic advisor. A minimum grade of “C” must be earned in the Quantitative Reasoning course to satisfy the requirement.

Do you have an ACT math sub-score between 23-27, SAT math sub-score between 580-660, Advanced Math Placement Test score between 260-290, or earned a minimum grade of “C” in MATH 104?

If yes, students are eligible to take any of the approved Quantitative Reasoning courses (course list), provided they also meet course prerequisites.

A minimum grade of “C” must be earned in the Quantitative Reasoning course to satisfy the requirement. Students not eligible may test into this category using the Advanced Mathematics Placement test (see Additional Information).

Do you have an ACT math sub-score of 28 or above, SAT math sub-score of 670 or above, or Advanced Math Placement Test score of 290 or above?

If yes, the Quantitative Reasoning requirement is waived. A QR waiver means that the QR requirement for the General Education Program is deemed to have been satisfied. Students may still have to take one of the designated QR courses if required in their major or minor or it is needed as a prerequisite to another course they wish or need, to take.

Additional Information

• A student’s major/minor may require additional or specific quantitative reasoning course(s).
• It is essential that students choose courses in coordination with their advisor. 
• All prerequisite courses in sequences must be completed with a C or better to advance to the next course in the sequence.
• A student must wait, a minimum of 30 days between a first and second attempt.
• The test must be taken within two calendar years from the beginning of the student’s first term at EMU with an application decision of “regular admit.” This also applies to a second attempt.
• To take the Advanced Math Placement Test, a student must have an ACT math sub-score of <19 or an SAT math sub-score < 520 or have passed the Algebra placement test with a minimum score of 273.
• A student cannot take the math placement test more than two times. This includes times that the test is taken for initial placement purposes.
