Physical Science [M.S.]

This is a designated STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program.

Program Admission


Prior secondary science teaching certification or department permission is required as well as an undergraduate major or minor in a physical science (physics, earth science, chemistry, physical science, or integrated science) with basic coursework in physics, earth science, chemistry, and astronomy (totaling at least 30 undergraduate hours). Mathematics preparation through college algebra and trigonometry is mandatory. Students who do not meet these requirements may be granted conditional admission requiring the completion of additional undergraduate coursework in science and/or mathematics. Admission is restricted to in-service teachers or those intending to enter the teaching profession in the United States.

All applicants must provide the following with their application:

  • Transcripts from all undergraduate institutions previously attended
  • A personal statement of at least 1,000 words explaining the purpose for pursuing the MS degree here at EMU
  • Two letters of recommendation.
