International Economics and Development [M.A.]

This program provides a basic understanding of the theoretical foundations and tools of economic analysis, enabling students to gain competence in economic theory and its uses. The program exposes students to a variety of areas of economic study through course work, independent study, and research. In addition, this program prepares students for technical careers (e.g. research and/or consulting for government and private business) in the fields of international economics and economic development.

Program Admission
 Degree admission is available to applicants who:
- Submit a completed Application for Graduate Admission to the Office of Admissions including nonrefundable application fee, all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts, TOEFL or other English test scores (international students only), and a personal statement indicating career goals and how this degree program prepares you to meet your career goals.
- Have earned the equivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Conditional admission is granted to those scheduled to complete their undergraduate degree before the start of their graduate studies.
- Have an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program.
- Satisfy undergraduate course requirements of intermediate macroeconomics (ECON 411 ) and microeconomics (ECON 412 ), economic statistics (ECON 310 ), and calculus (MATH 119 or MATH 120 ) or equivalents with grades of at least B- in each.
International Transcripts - Students with non-U.S. post-secondary credentials must submit an evaluation of their international transcripts from one of four approved evaluation services for a detailed, course-by-course report. Applicants should allow 2-6 weeks for the completed evaluation. Please visit International Admissions for additional information.
Conditional Admission - Conditional admission may be granted to those who show promise of success in this master’s program but fail to meet one or more of the admission requirements listed above. Conditionally admitted students must overcome specified deficiencies in order to have their status changed to degree admission. No more than 12 hours of graduate coursework in economics taken by a student on conditional status may be counted toward the degree.

Degree Requirements: 30 hours
The M.A. in International Economics and Development requires 30 hours of course work to be distributed among required courses and program courses as follows
Required Courses: 21 hours
Students must complete the following required courses with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
Restricted Elective Courses: 9 hours
Choose a minimum of three credit hours from Group A; the remaining six credit hours selected from either group.
