Medical Economics [Graduate Certificate]

This program will prepare students to:

  1. Understand the application of economic principles to medical care issues.
  2. Understand the role of economic forces underlying the transformation of the medical care system.
  3. Explain the economic aspects and implications of contractual relationships between patients, providers, and insurers.
  4. Evaluate the quality, effectiveness, and cost of medical care.
  5. Understand the economic structure of the healthcare industry and how it affects the financing and delivery of medical care.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Graduate School Requirements

A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution. In addition, a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program, is required for full admission. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission. See International Admissions for international applicant requirements.

Degree Requirements: 15 hours


Except for ECON 500, credits earned in this certificate program may subsequently be counted toward the Health Economics [M.A.] .

Required Courses: 9 hours


Students must complete the following required courses with a cumulative 3.0 GPA. For students who have taken ECON 201  (or equivalent course) and ECON 202  (or equivalent course), ECON 500  is waived. In this case, the student would select an additional elective course. 

Elective Courses: 6 hours


Choose six credit hours from the following. At a minimum, one course must be selected from Group A.
