Applied Econometrics [M.S.]

This STEM-designated degree program provides an organized and carefully developed study of applied econometrics. While the program seeks to meet the need for empirically oriented applied econometricians. In addition to the sequence of core courses, the program stresses research opportunities and the use of quantitative approaches. The extensive application of computer techniques is integral to the program.

Students develop expertise in hypothesis testing and model building for the analysis of complex public policy issues such as monetary and fiscal policy, consumer and business behavior, health care analysis, modeling, and forecasting.

This is a designated STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Graduate School Requirements

A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution. In addition, a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program, is required for full admission. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission. See International Admissions for international applicant requirements.

Applicants must also meet the following program requirements:

  • Satisfy undergraduate course requirements of intermediate macroeconomics (ECON 411 ), intermediate microeconomics (ECON 412 ), economic statistics (ECON 310 ), and calculus (MATH 119  or MATH 120 ) or equivalents with grades of at least B- in each.

Conditional Admission

Conditional admission may be granted to those who show promise of success in this master’s program but fail to meet one or more of the admission requirements listed above. Conditionally admitted students must overcome specified deficiencies to have their status changed to degree admission. No more than 12 hours of graduate coursework in economics taken by a student on conditional status may be counted toward the degree.

Degree Requirements: 30 hours


The M.S. in Applied Econometrics requires 30 hours of course work to be distributed among required and restricted elective courses as follows

Required Courses: 18 hours


Students must complete the following required courses with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Restricted Elective Courses: 12 hours


Students will complete a minimum of 12 credit hours from the following. Students will select a minimum of six credit hours from Group A. The remaining six credit hours are chosen from either group. Courses only count once toward this requirement.
