World Languages (French) [M.A.]


The Master of Arts in World Languages - French program aims to improve students’ cultural knowledge and linguistic proficiency, enhancing their professional skills and/or preparing them for further graduate study.

Program Objectives:

  1. Development of advanced/professional level skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French;
  2. Cultural acquisition through the study of French and French-speaking cultures and literature;
  3. Acquisition of research skills.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Graduate School Requirements

A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution. In addition, a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program, is required for full admission. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission. See International Admissions for international applicant requirements.

Applicants must also meet the following program requirements:

  • Candidates must hold an undergraduate major or minor in French
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement in french (Instructions )
  • Candidates must complete an oral proficiency interview in the language of their specialization with a rating of “Advanced-low” on the ACTFL scale (Additional Information )

Conditional admission may be granted to candidates with deficiencies in french. Such candidates must successfully complete deficiency courses including, but not limited to, FRNH 343L5 - French Composition  and FRNH 344L5 - French Conversation . Graduate credit will not be granted for these courses.

The French faculty will review applications.

Degree Requirements: 30-32 hours


The Master of Arts in World Languages (French) requires 30-32 hours of course work to be distributed as follows

Cultural Immersion Experience


Students in all programs must complete a cultural immersion experience of at least six weeks in a country where the target language is predominant. Students who believe they have already fulfilled this requirement may petition to have the requirement waived or reduced; if the petition is approved, the candidate may substitute up to six hours of restricted electives. Students may satisfy this requirement through the intensive immersion experience offered in their language program. Similar programs of study with corroborating documentation may be accepted upon approval of the faculty of the area of concentration. Students should select a study abroad program in consultation with a faculty advisor prior to enrollment in any such program.
