Communication Sciences and Disorders [M.A.]

Students who enter the graduate program in Communication Sciences and Disorders are trained to work in various settings with children and adults. Students seeking Teacher Certification in addition to the Master’s degree should see a graduate advisor for additional teacher certification requirements. Those who do not have undergraduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders must complete the undergraduate deficiencies. Students must consult a graduate advisor in Communication Sciences and Disorders before enrolling in major courses. Admission to this program is competitive.

Model

Eastern Michigan University’s advanced professional education programs develop leaders who demonstrate reflective thought and scholarship within the context of a diverse society. In addition, the masters-level programs in the Department of Special Education and Communication Sciences and Disorders produce professionals with the comprehensive knowledge, skills, and attitudes to deliver a continuum of habilitative/rehabilitative services to persons with special needs, and their families, within a diverse society.

Graduate School Application

Admission Requirements

A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution. In addition, a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required for full admission. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission. See International Admissions for international applicant requirements.

Applicants must also meet the following program requirements:

  • Submit GRE scores. The GRE is not required for the Fall 2022 or Winter 2023 application cycle in response to the ongoing public health crisis.
  • Provide a Personal Essay. The personal essay must address the following. 
    • Tell us about what influenced your decision to enter the Communication Sciences and Disorders field. (word limit: 250)
    • What about our program at EMU interests you? (word limit: 250)
    • Describe a challenging academic/professional situation and how you resolved it. (word limit: 250)
    • What should we know about your background, identity, or learner experiences that are not evident from your transcript? (word limit: 250)
  • Provide a CV/Resume (1-2 pages).
  • Submit three letters of recommendation.

International Applicants

International students applying to the communication sciences and disorders master’s program must demonstrate adequate English proficiency by submitting an official score report received directly from the following test agencies with acceptable scores no more than two years old. (See below). Applicants must achieve a total score on the TOEFL iBT of 94 or greater across all categories (i.e., reading, listening, speaking, writing) or a total score on the IELTS of 7 or greater across all categories (i.e., reading, listening, speaking, writing).

Program Requirements


The program requirements for attaining a Master of Arts degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders differ in some aspects from those of the Graduate School in that:

  • Only six hours of graduate transfer credit will be accepted.
  • All candidates must meet the clinical and academic requirements for certification of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) prior to receiving their degrees.
  • All candidates must complete a minimum of 60 hours of approved graduate credit. Only 6 hours of transfer credit may be counted toward the 60 hours, with advisor approval.
  • All candidates must pass major courses with a grade of B- or better and clinical courses with a B or better.

Endorsement/Approval Sequence

Students must be free from any administrative or academic probation before an internship or practicum experience is approved. The endorsement sequence is independent of a degree program. Completion of the minimum degree requirements does not guarantee endorsement, and the completion of endorsement requirements do not result in the awarding of a degree.

Foundation Courses: 14 hours


Students without an undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders must also take the following courses

The following courses are offered to students for completion of the master’s degree program and are considered to be a standard program of study. Students who transfer from other universities should consult their academic advisor concerning equivalencies.

Exit Requirements


To be eligible for graduation and receipt of the Master of Arts degree, the student must:

  • Complete a capstone experience in CSD 694  or a Master’s Thesis in SPGN 692 , at the end of the program.
  • Complete required, coursework, clinical practica, and internships, as described.
  • Submit a completed ASHA application to the advisor.
  • Submit copies of all clinical practica logs to the advisor.

Teaching Certification (Optional)


Students may elect to pursue teaching certification. Students choosing to do so and selecting Elementary Certification must complete a second major in Liberal Arts for Elementary Education. Also, those selecting Elementary Certification must pass the “Elementary Education” certification test, #103. Students selecting Secondary Certification must select a teachable minor from the approved list. See the undergraduate catalog for additional information.

Note - This is a requirement if the student has not already completed a major or minor appropriate to the level of certification sought during the completion of the bachelor’s degree.
