The M.S. in Physical Science is designed for in-service teachers at the secondary education level. Students will gain various coursework and laboratory experience to prepare them for either further academic studies or as preparation for an applied career in industry. The program will be individually tailored upon consultation with an academic advisor.
The program is designed to:
- Provide a breadth of scientific knowledge across the disciplines
- Emphasize scientific literacy and professional communication
- Provide a solid foundation of experimental and laboratory work
- Allow students to tailor the focus to their personal strengths individually
This is a designated STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program.

Graduate School Application

The program you are applying to may not accept applicants every semester.

Admission Requirements
Minimum Graduate School Requirements
A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution. In addition, a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program, is required for full admission. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission. See International Admissions for international applicant requirements.
Applicants must also meet the following program requirements:
- Current secondary science teaching certification or department permission
- An undergraduate major or minor in physical science (physics, earth science, chemistry, physical science, or integrated science)
- Basic coursework in physics, earth science, chemistry, and astronomy (totaling at least 30 undergraduate hours)
- Mathematics preparation through college algebra and trigonometry is mandatory
- A personal statement of 1-2 pages explaining the purpose for pursuing the MS degree at EMU
- Two letters of recommendation
Admission is restricted to in-service teachers or those intending to enter the teaching profession in the United States.
Students who do not meet these requirements may be granted conditional admission requiring additional undergraduate coursework in science and/or mathematics.
