Historic Preservation [M.S.]

The Master of Science in Historic Preservation is an applied degree that requires a minimum of 36 credit hours of graduate course work. Its mission is to focus upon career development in the concentration areas to prepare students for gainful employment in historic preservation in the public and private sectors. There are two concentrations available in the Historic Preservation Program. Courses are distributed among prerequisites, core, concentration, and elective courses. For additional information, please see the program’s website.

Admission Requirements

Minimum Graduate School Requirements

A four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution. In addition, a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program, is required for full admission. Applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission. See International Admissions for international applicant requirements.

Applicants must also meet the following program requirements:

  • Have attained at least a 2.75-grade point average in the major field during the last two undergraduate years;
  • Personal Statement; and
  • Two letters of recommendation.

Program Information


Students in the program must: 

  • Selection, in consultation with the program advisor, of a course of study in historic preservation
  • Completion of 36 hours of approved graduate-level coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree as described below under course requirements.
  • Completion of prerequisite courses. The number of hours and the specific courses will be stipulated by the program advisor according to the student’s prior coursework.

Required Prerequisites: 0-17 hours


Students must complete coursework in each of the following foundation areas or have completed an acceptable undergraduate equivalent:
