Revised Program [Fall 2022]

This program is an entry-level master’s degree offered via two different routes. A student may begin the program at Eastern Michigan University as a first-year student. This student would follow the Combined Athletic Training program (CAT ). This is a 3+2 program that will award a student a bachelor’s and master’s degree when completed. These students will meet all the pre-admission requirements at EMU and apply to the program during the winter semester of their third year. If accepted, the student will then start the following summer semester and complete the “professional phase” of the program. This will complete their fourth and fifth years. This phase is two full years that require summer coursework. This route would include students who transfer to EMU and do not have an earned bachelor’s degree. When students graduate, they will earn a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Athletic Training degree.

The other route students may take to earn the entry-level masters is the Master of Athletic Training Program (MAT). This program would be for students who have an earned bachelor’s degree and meet all the pre-admissions requirements. These students would apply during the winter semester of the year they plan on beginning the program. If accepted, they would start during the summer semester and have two full years of coursework.

All students will go through the program as a cohort and are required to be full-time students to meet the didactic and clinical demands of the program.

Learn

Students will be able to engage in thoughtful dialogue and engage in problem-solving, critical thinking, and analysis regarding all aspects of athletic training.
Students will promote and practice respect and unbiased treatment of physically active individuals regardless of race, color, gender, or religious affiliation.
Students will obtain all skills and knowledge necessary to complete the defined curriculum, sit for the BOC certification examination, and serve as certified athletic trainers. (SLO)
Students will be able to demonstrate the use of Evidence-Based Medicine in the application of their AT knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Opportunities

Students develop clinical and critical thinking skills through five practicum semesters that culminate in an immersive clinical internship during the sixth semester in the program. Students are given opportunities during their clinical education at high schools, universities, sports medicine clinics, hospitals, and physician clinics. In addition, they have interprofessional education experiences with programs within and outside of the University.

Admit Terms and Deadlines

Submitted applications and our rolling admissions process will begin on November 1. Applications are due February 1, with interviews occurring no later than April 1. All steps must be completed and admission requirements met by the deadline for your application to be reviewed by the school.

Minimum Graduate School Requirements

For full admission, applicants must have 1) Earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution, 2) a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program. Conditional admission may be available to applicants who do not meet minimum admission requirements.

Application materials submitted to ATCAS include:

Applicants must have an earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university or an appropriate international institution. Applicants may apply while their degree is in progress, but degree completion must be documented with official transcripts before the start of the Athletic Training Program. A minimum of a 2.75 overall GPA is required.

Applicants must have earned a “C” or better in a course in the following areas or provide documentation of credential (Course Completion Form). The EMU courses offered in each area are listed below in parenthesis:

Applicants must provide documentation of 50 observation hours with an ATC. At no time during your observation can you represent yourself as an EMU “athletic training student.” You are a student applying to get into the Athletic Training Program.

Two settings/populations must be observed
Documentation of hours (provided form) signature of ATC with BOC number and state license number
Volunteer form
Two professional or academic letters of reference

Applicants must include a personal statement that includes career goals, past experiences, and personal qualities. This statement will be used to evaluate the applicant’s ability to write professionally.

Application

Your application will be submitted using ATCAS, a Centralized Application Service (CAS) hosted by Liaison. After reviewing the admission requirements, please review the application instructions and select the appropriate application.

2023-2024 Application (Summer 2023)

Domestic Applicants Within the application, follow the instructions to submit an official transcript from all previously attended institutions.

International Applicants Before applying, applicants must review the international application/process deadlines at emich.edu/international as they may differ from general program requirements.

The application deadline is February 1. Initially, applications will be evaluated for the minimum requirements (completion of the portfolio). The Athletic Training Advisory Committee will review applications that meet the minimum requirements. Applicants will be notified by March 1 if they will be granted an interview. Admission to the program is competitive; not all applicants will be given an interview.

Critical Graduation Information

Each graduate student is responsible for fulfilling the requirements or equivalents of the Eastern Michigan University catalog in force at the time of their initial registration or a subsequent catalog, including the one in effect at the time of their graduation.

Master’s degree requirements must be completed within six (6) years of first enrollment in the master’s degree program.

In the event a student does not complete the master’s degree requirements within six years of the date of their original registration, the student may be required to have their credits re-evaluated by the academic department(s) of their degree in keeping with catalog requirements in force during the year of their graduation.

The following are minimum requirements for all master’s degrees awarded by Eastern Michigan University. Some programs require more than the minimum in one or more areas below.

A master’s degree must require a minimum of 30 credit hours.
No more than six credits of independent study courses and no more than 12 credit hours of special topics and independent study courses combined may be applied to a graduate degree.
Residency Requirement:
- For students admitted to master’s degree programs of 36 or fewer required hours, at least 24 new graduate hours beginning the semester of acceptance and enrollment into the degree program must be earned at EMU. The remaining program requirement hours may be met through transfer or prior degree credit (EMU or elsewhere).
- For students admitted to master’s degree programs of 37 or more required hours, at least 30 new graduate hours beginning the semester of acceptance and enrollment into the degree program must be earned at EMU. Minimum degree hours must still be met for graduation. The remaining program requirement hours may be met through transfer or prior degree credit (EMU or elsewhere).
- Residency and enrollment in multiple programs: Students enrolled in multiple master’s/specialist degree programs must have 24 unique credit hours in each degree program.
Only credits from one completed graduate certificate may be applied to a master’s or specialist degree in a relevant field of study, as determined by the Graduate School and with the approval of the degree-granting academic department, and be included in the residency hours above.
Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in all graduate-level courses taken at EMU and in their program of study to remain in good academic standing and be eligible for graduation. Students do not need to be registered for classes during the semester of graduation.
The Graduate School does not permit the use of undergraduate courses (499 and below) to meet degree requirements on graduate programs of study.
Some master’s programs require a thesis; others require a special project or internship; others require students to pass a final exam. See the Graduate School website for Thesis and Dissertation Manuals, all forms, and information about research and human subject approval. Every completed thesis or dissertation must be submitted to Digital Commons. Any form of graduate student work submitted to Digital Commons must first be approved by a faculty advisor and the Graduate School.
