CHL 583 Children’s Illustrated Texts This course examines different kinds of illustrated texts aimed at children and young readers. Primarily, the class looks at the picture book, its historical development, current illustrators and theories of illustration. The class also examines associated genres such as the comic book and graphic novel and considers theoretical issues concerning illustration in general.

CRTW 523 Writing Workshop: Poetry and Poetics This course combines the study of poetics with creative practice. The investigation of poetics assists writers in articulating the relationship of their poetry to social, aesthetic, historical, linguistic, and philosophical frameworks. Combing creative writing with studies in poetics, students will have the opportunity to develop their writing with an awareness of the larger contexts of art that ground their practice and thought.

CRTW 692 Master’s Writing Project The student will conceive, propose, and realize an original and sustained work of literary writing, either a collection or a single piece (fiction, poetry, essays, hybrid genres, or a combination of genres) in relation to an interdisciplinary (cognate) project. The length and form of this Master’s Writing Project will be determined in consultation with the student’s project advisor. The interdisciplinary project may be integrated into the writing, or it may exist separately but in a dynamic relation with the student’s literary writing.

LING 535 Discourse Analysis Study of discourse structure and conversational interaction from several analytical perspectives, e.g., interactional sociolinguistics, pragmatics and ethnolinguistics. Identification of the structural cues and interpretive conventions that make discourse meaningful within a speech community. Topics may include: cross-cultural communication, gender and discourse, personal narrative, speech acts and presupposition.

LING 538 Multilingual Text Processing An empirical and computational analysis of the requirements of computing in a global and multilingual environment. Covers the world’s writing systems, from scripts such as Tibetan and Arabic to systems devised by and for linguists, such as the International Phonetic Alphabet; technologies, algorithms and programming interfaces commonly used for multilingual text processing, including the Unicode Standard; and multilingual aspects of voice- and video-based applications.
