CHEM 101 - Chemistry for Elementary Teachers (GEKN)


Designed for students who plan to teach in elementary school. Lectures deal with some basic principles of chemistry while the laboratory work emphasizes the discovery approach as it may be used in an elementary classroom. Simple equipment and easily obtained chemicals are used in the experiments. Does not count toward major or minor.

Credit Hours: 3 hrs Lecture/Lab Hours: Lecture: two hours per week. Laboratory: two hours per week.

Chemistry for Elementary Teachers is one of four science courses that are required for all Elementary Education majors. This set of required courses in the natural sciences is designed to give students a general understanding of the laws that govern the natural world, an introduction to the scientific method, and provide strategies for teaching these concepts to elementary school students. In particular, the CHEM 101 course provides an introduction to basic chemical theories and concepts, while the laboratory portion of the course gives students the opportunity to employ the scientific method to solve simple chemical problems. Finally, the course aims at providing students with the tools to understand the physical world and everyday manifestations of chemical laws. Because of the introductory nature of the course and given the relevance of the topics discussed in the course to everyday life.
