To be able to communicate in Japanese and appreciate linguistic and cultural similarities and differences, JPNE 122 students learn to produce through speaking and writing, and to understand through reading and listening, the elements of the Japanese language necessary to be able to function at a basic level in a Japanese speaking environment. Instruction in JPNE 122 provides examples of speaking and writing that native speakers use to accomplish real tasks; students learn to master these structures while developing a new perspective on their own language, and an appreciation of a foreign cultural viewpoint.
