MUSC 301W - History of Music to 1750 [GEWI]


Chronological study of western music in its historical and cultural setting. Recognition of idioms, changing sound, styles and forms of music in medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, approximately through 1750. In this course, you will accumulate music history vocabulary, concepts, and understanding as a basis for your developing musicianship and as a foundation of your professional expertise in music.

This course satisfies the Writing Intensive requirement for Music Majors. The course is designed to use writing as a central aspect of the pedagogy, that is, you will write to learn music history. In addition, as an upper level course for music majors, a significant goal of the course is preparation for professional writing in the field of music.
