SOCL 403W - Modern Sociological Theory [GEWI]


The rise and development of sociological thought from Comte to the present. The works of various European and American schools analyzed and critically appraised in terms of their value in empirical research.

This course is organized to have students develop and employ successful, flexible writing and reading strategies that support sustained inquiry in sociology. The course will culminate in a research project where students will use writing strategies designed to increase knowledge of how sociological theory has evolved to aid our understanding of pressing issues facing our contemporary world by formulating research questions, and responding to them by searching library data bases as well as incorporate assigned readings to conduct a literature review. This course will lead to the student learning to communicate, disseminate, and interpret information within sociology. Finally, this research project will be a process where student work is supported through intermediate steps with opportunities for feedback and revision.
