IDE 430W - Writing for Interior Design [GEWI]
The course focuses on writing about interior design topics. Students will develop their skills in presenting design content accurately and efficiently on a variety of topics dealing with design discourse, business practices, and technical processes. By focusing the students’ attention on writing for a professional audience, a higher degree of relevancy will be stressed.

This course is intended for students in the Interior Design Major in the School of Visual and Built Environments). The purpose of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to excel in writing that is relevant to the Interior Design profession. By connecting writing and design content more closely, this course prepares students for the expectations of the workplace and improves their opportunities for professional advancement.
Interior design professionals must be able to use appropriate language for the appropriate audiences in presenting their ideas and designs. In the Interior Design profession, visual presentations are used to make the initial impact, however, what is appealing to the eye needs to be justified on paper and followed through throughout the design process in order for designs to come alive. It is important for students to leave the program with sufficient knowledge about how to prepare and administer contract documents, how to use persuasion when pursuing potential projects, and how to engage in profitable discourse about any given design project. The inclusion of an intensive writing course that focuses strictly on the Interior Design profession will allow students to develop these skills. In contrast to most IDE courses, which emphasize the applications of interior design theory and technology via graphic presentation, this course focuses entirely on clear and concise writing.
