MUSC 105 - Appreciating Jazz: America’s Music [GEKA]
Starting with the American Nineteenth Century, this course will examine the ways in which jazz evolved from vernacular and folk styles into an internationally recognized form of art music. Students will learn to aurally recognize performers and compositions from all of the major stylistic periods in jazz history and to recognize common song structures.
Credit 3 hrs May not be repeated for additional credit

Through this course, students will achieve a deeper understanding of how jazz is uniquely an American art music, learn how it came into being, and develop the skills and knowledge to appreciate the art and its practitioners. Students will also learn the fundamentals of music through the exploration of the underlying properties of organized sound such as melody, harmony, rhythm, texture and form.
