Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - Chemistry and Society Laboratory (CHEM 116) and its required companion laboratory course (CHEM 115 ) examine the relevance of chemistry to the problem of how humans relate to the environment. This pair of courses explores some of the major environmental issues of our time, such as global warming, air and water pollution and energy consumption. During the discussion of these problems, chemical concepts are introduced as a tool to understand the scientific basis of possible solutions. The courses are designed for non-science majors and in this context, they discuss many of the basic concepts, theories, and techniques that are fundamental to the chemical sciences. The aim of the course is to enable students to examine science-related societal issues using the basic knowledge and tools of chemistry and to evaluate proposed solutions to the issues using a scientific approach.
