MATH 180 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I [GEQR] The focus of this course is unpacking the mathematical content knowledge needed to teach elementary school mathematics, pre-kindergarten to grade 6. Topics include mathematical modeling, geometry, measurement, and data analysis while modeling and using practices to more effectively help all elementary students make sense of mathematics.
Credit 3 hrs May not be repeated for additional credit Grade Mode Normal (A-F) Course Rotation Fall, Winter, and Summer
Prerequisites - Level 3 Math Placement , MATH 098 with “C” or higher , MATH 110 , MATH 104 , MATH 105 , or MATH 107 Other Restrictions - Restriction by Major - Elementary - Early Childhood Teaching and Learning (with Certification) [BS] , Special Education K-12 Endorsement [BS] , Special Education K-12 Communication Sciences and Disorders Endorsement [BS] , or Elementary Education - Intent Restriction by Class - Undergraduate standing
Rationale for Quantitative Reasoning - This course will provide students with ways to approach the quantitative information that they are certain to encounter in later coursework at Eastern Michigan University throughout their careers, and in daily life. The emphasis is on learning methods for comprehending, analyzing, and using quantitative information and on techniques for using data to inform decisions about real-world events and problems.
In addition, the course is specifically designed to meet the needs of students that are looking toward becoming elementary school teachers. While the content of this class mirrors that of MATH 110 , the examples, applications, and projects are designed to help you make connections to the K-5 classroom and help you to begin to think about how you will teach young children to make sense of some beginning mathematical concepts.
