LEAD 201L1 Introduction to Leadership [GEKS and GELB]
This course serves as an introduction to the study of leadership, including theoretical, philosophical, and conceptual foundations. Students will discover the traits and practices necessary to expand and develop personal leadership plans. With an emphasis on reflection, writing, and experiential learning, the course will engage a variety of learning styles and activities to introduce the vast discipline of leadership. Students will be exposed to opportunities and services on campus necessary for support in the pursuits of academic, personal, and social goals at Eastern Michigan University. This course will expand the range of the student’s leadership skills/styles across campus units, thereby linking theory to practice. The course is designed and required for all personas interest in pursuing a leadership minor and must be taken prior to LEAD 301L2 Emerging as a Culturally Competent Leader [GELB] and LEAD 401L4 Inventing A Leadership Life [GELB] .

Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - This course introduces students to an interdisciplinary study of leadership. As a course in the “Knowledge of the Disciplines: Social Science” component of the General Education curriculum, it emphasizes the historical developments of leadership theory in multiple social science disciplines and how various social science researchers acquire and share knowledge related to our contemporary understanding of leadership and its impact on organizations and societies. Using seminal texts (i.e. Northouse (2016); Komives, Lucas, & McMahon (2013); Kouze & Posner (2014)) students will examine theoretical frameworks in order to analyze and critique various definitions of and approaches to leadership. Students will critically evaluate the design of and the results from leadership research. This course requires students to use the theoretical frameworks of the study of leadership–Behavioral, Cognitive, Economic, Historical, Social Interactionism–to pose and address questions of contemporary issues related to leadership. This interdisciplinary lens provides content knowledge for students to examine and discuss the conflict, power, social justice, and change at an organizational, societal and global level. This course also provides students with the opportunity to gather, examine, and interpret data, and to report the findings of their research, thus contributing to their understanding of how inquiry is conducted and knowledge is disseminated in social science. The course prepares students for citizenship in modern society and introduces them to social science methodologies, and the impact of leadership on society and culture.
