JPNE 121L5 Beginning Japanese I [GEKH or GELB] Practice in elementary conversation with attention to reading and writing the two Japanese syllabaries and basic ideographs.

Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - To be able to communicate in Japanese and appreciate linguistic and cultural similarities and differences, JPNE 121 students learn to produce through speaking and writing and to understand through reading and listening, the elements of the Japanese language necessary to be able to function at a basic level in a Japanese speaking environment. Instruction in JPNE 121 provides examples of speaking and writing that native speakers use to accomplish real tasks; students learn to master these structures while developing a new perspective on their own language, and an appreciation of a foreign cultural viewpoint.
