Nursing - Completion [BSN]

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs by Department/School

If you are a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, the RN to BSN Completion program provides a pathway to earning your Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN). Earning a BSN will expand your career growth and employability; it is also a requirement for programs leading to advanced practice degrees in nursing. The RN to BSN Completion program builds on both your education and practice to prepare you for new opportunities.

This degree program is available online. Please see online.emich.edu for additional information.

Learn

The coursework in the RN to BSN Completion program broadens your exposure to the role of nursing in areas such as communication, critical thinking, writing, evidence-based practice, advocacy, health policy, and leadership. There is one practice-based course focusing on population-based nursing.

Opportunities

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the employment of RNs is expected to grow at a much faster rate than other occupations. An increasing number of hospitals are working toward Magnet Status which designates hospitals that satisfy criteria designed to measure the strength and quality of their nursing. To achieve Magnet Status, many hospitals are seeking RNs who have earned a BSN or are working toward a BSN. After completing a BSN you may choose to earn higher degrees toward a Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Nurse Anesthetist, or earn your Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing.

Program Admission

The BSN Completion program requires a separate application and admission process. While students may be admitted to the University as a Nursing Intent student (Major Code: INRC or IR2B), admission to the BSN Completion program is not guaranteed.

Requirements

Applicants are considered for selection into the BSN Completion Program based on the following criteria

  • Hold a current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
  • A 2.5 or better cumulative college G.P.A (4.0 scale)
  • WRTG 121  or successful completion of a college-level course in English composition with a minimum course grade of 2.0 (4.0 scale) or higher before entry into the program.
  • Successful completion of the TOEFL or MELAB scores to meet EMU requirements if English is a second language.

The University may give credit for nursing courses taken at another college or university; however, the School reserves the right to make the final decision on course substitution based on examination of Course Materials. Requirements may vary based on prior education. Students must speak with an academic advisor in the CHHS Intent Advising Office 734.487.0918 for details on transfer equivalencies.

The following prerequisite courses (or transfer equivalencies) are required for application to the BSN program:

Application Process

Applicants must

  • Apply to Eastern Michigan University. Consult with the EMU Office of Admissions regarding application forms, procedures, requirements, and deadlines. Submit official transcripts from each educational institution you have attended so your EMU admission application can be processed.
  • After admission to the university, your application to the School of Nursing will be reviewed. You will be notified via email of your acceptance into the program.

Note: Applicants who hold an RN license and a bachelor’s degree in another discipline and are seeking admission to the BSN Completion Program must also meet with an EMU Academic Advisor in addition to the above requirements (734.487.0918). These applicants are eligible for the RN-MSN bridge program and an EMU Academic Advisor can provide specific information.

Students applying for the BSN Completion Program should seek Michigan Transfer Agreement endorsement from their community college, the MACRAO agreement, or have less than 5 general education courses General Education  required before starting their nursing courses.

General Education Requirements:

For specific requirements, see General Education  or view the General Education Worksheet [PDF] .

Major Requirements: 79-81 hours

All of the following courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C (2.0 on a 4.0 scale). Students must complete the BSN program within six years of taking NURS 300W Reading and Writing in Nursing Studies [GEWI]

The University requirement that students may not earn “more than 60 credit hours in one subject area (prefix)” is waived for students in this major. Students in this program may earn up to (but not exceed) 75 hours in “NURS” credit towards graduation. Only “NURS” courses taken at EMU will count towards the 60-hour requirement.

Minor Requirement:

This major does not require a minor.

Program Total:

Students must earn a minimum total of 120 credits at the 100-level or above.

Critical Graduation Information

Each undergraduate student will be responsible for fulfilling the requirements (or their equivalents) of the Eastern Michigan University catalog in force at the time of their initial registration at a college or university or a subsequent catalog, including the one in effect at the time of their graduation.

In the event an undergraduate student does not complete the degree requirements within seven years of the date of their original registration at a college or university, the student may be required to have their credits re-evaluated by the academic department(s) of their major/minor in keeping with catalog requirements in force during the year of their graduation.

Minimum requirements for all bachelor’s degrees awarded by Eastern Michigan University

Some majors and minors require more than the minimum in one or more of the areas below; students are urged to consult this catalog for the requirements of their particular programs.

  • Earn a minimum total of 120 credit hours at the 100-level and above.
    • Courses numbered below 100 are not counted toward this degree requirement.
    • At most, eight credit hours of physical education (PEGN) activity courses are counted toward this requirement.
  • Meet the requirements of the General Education program (see information below), including completing a Writing Intensive (GEWI) course in the student’s major.
  • Earn a minimum of 60 credits from a four-year college or university; courses taken at community colleges cannot be used to meet this requirement (Some formal program-to-program articulation agreements modify this requirement. See specific agreements for details).
  • Earn a minimum of 30 credits from courses taken at EMU.
  • Complete 10 of the last 30 hours for the degree from courses taken at EMU.
  • Have a minimum of 30 unique credit hours in their major and 20 unique credit hours in their minor for a total of at least 50 unique credit hours between them. Some majors that require 50 or more hours themselves do not require a minor. A double major automatically satisfies the need for a minor unless one of the two majors requires a specific minor. Students should check the requirements of the selected major in the undergraduate catalog to see if a minor is required.
  • Earn no more than 60 credit hours in one subject area (prefix). Credits over the 60 maximum will not be counted toward the minimum of 120 credits required for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Earn the minimum number of credits in 300-level and above courses in each major and minor as specified below - these credits must be earned in distinct courses; that is, no course can be used to fulfill this requirement in more than one major or minor.
    • Earn a minimum of 6 credits in 300-level or higher courses at EMU in each minor
    • Earn a minimum of 9 credits in 300-level or higher courses at EMU in each major that requires a minor.
    • Earn a minimum of 15 credits in 300-level or higher courses at EMU in each major that does not require a minor
  • Transfer credit will be awarded for courses taken at colleges and universities that are accredited by one of the recognized regional accrediting bodies only if the courses are college-level (equated to 100-level or above at EMU) and the student earned a “C” (or 2.0 on a 4 point scale) or better. Transfer credit may be awarded on a case-by-case basis for college-level courses in which a “C” (2.0) or better was earned at institutions outside the U.S. or at non-accredited U.S. institutions; individual departments/schools conduct the internal review of such courses within EMU, and additional documentation may be required. Please note: EMU awards only credit for transferred courses; grades are not used to calculate an EMU GPA.
  • Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in courses taken at EMU to graduate. In addition, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 must be reached in each major and minor. Only courses a student takes at EMU and those applied to their major or minor are used to calculate their major and minor cumulative GPAs. (Note: some programs may require a higher GPA - check with your program advisor.)

General Education Requirements - EMU’s General Education Program requires students to choose from a menu of approved courses in several different areas; do not assume that other courses in the same department or similar names will fulfill these requirements. A detailed description of General Education requirements is available in the General Education  section of the catalog.

Students who transferred to EMU may have modified general education requirements based on Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) or articulation agreements; consult your academic advisor for additional information.
