A student selecting the Teaching and Learning with Certification will earn a Bachelor of Science and be certified to teach children in the ages of their concentration.
Option 1 - Early Childhood Comprehensive: Early childhood education focuses on working with children from birth through age eight, including children with special developmental and learning needs. Students completing a concentration in Early Childhood Comprehensive will earn a degree to prepare them for endorsements to teach Birth-Kindergarten General and Special Education (ZN endorsement) and Pre-kindergarten to Third Grade (ZO endorsement).
Option 2 - Elementary Comprehensive: Students completing a concentration in Elementary Comprehensive will earn a degree that will prepare them for endorsements to teach Pre-kindergarten to Third Grade (ZO endorsement) and Third-Sixth Grades (ZP endorsement).
Single Grade Bands: Select one of the following with either a Special Education K-12 Endorsement [BS] , Special Education K-12 Communication Sciences and Disorders Endorsement [BS] , or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Minor .
Option 3 - Birth to Kindergarten: Students completing a concentration in Birth to Kindergarten (B-K) will earn a degree to prepare them for endorsements to teach Birth-Kindergarten (ZN). This must be partnered with a Special Education Major or Teaching English as a Second Language minor.
Option 4 - Pre-kindergarten to Third Grade: Students completing a concentration in Pre-kindergarten to Third Grade (PK-3) will earn a degree that will prepare them for endorsements to teach Pre-kindergarten - Third Grade (ZO endorsement). This must be partnered with a Special Education Major or Teaching English as a Second Language minor.
Option 5 - Third to Sixth Grade: Students completing a concentration in Third to Sixth Grade (3-6) will earn a degree that will prepare them for endorsements to teach Third to 6th Grade (ZP endorsement). This must be partnered with a Special Education Major or Teaching English as a Second Language minor.
Learn
A student earning this degree will learn the disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge needed to teach children in their endorsement areas. This includes English language arts, mathematics, reading, science, and social studies content in addition to the student-focused instructional strategies. Students exiting this program will have developed a solid understanding of incorporating social justice and social-emotional learning into their practice.
Opportunities
Earning this degree requires students to have intensive and extensive clinical experiences with children throughout. This begins with an introductory survey course and ends with the semester-long student teaching experience. Certified teachers with the B-K concentration will teach in early childhood settings and kindergarten, including special education classrooms (ZN endorsement), certified teachers with P-3 concentration will be able to teach in pre-kindergarten to third-grade classrooms (ZO endorsement). Certified teachers with 3-6 concentration will be able to teach in elementary third through sixth-grade self-contained classrooms (ZP endorsement).
