CHEM 101 Chemistry for Elementary Teachers [GEKN]


Designed for students who plan to teach in elementary school. Lectures deal with some basic principles of chemistry while the laboratory work emphasizes the discovery approach as it may be used in an elementary classroom. Simple equipment and easily obtained chemicals are used in the experiments. Does not count toward major or minor.

Rationale for Knowledge of the Disciplines - This course is one of the science courses required for all students majoring in Integrated Science Elementary Education. This set of required courses in the natural sciences is designed to give students a general understanding of the laws that govern the natural world, an introduction to the scientific method, and provide strategies for teaching these ideas to elementary school students. In particular, this course provides an introduction to fundamental chemical theories and concepts, while the laboratory portion of the course gives students the opportunity to employ the scientific method to solve simple chemical problems. Finally, the course aims at providing students with the tools to understand the physical world and everyday manifestations of chemical laws.
