Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Health Care Systems (HCS)

This program prepares students as educators in health care systems. The focus is on education of client/family groups, staff development, extended programs and educational outreach, and teaching in health care and nursing education. The program focuses on the educator role and the theory and practice of teaching and learning. Course work examines theories, strategies and research related to the teaching/learning process in health care systems, curriculum patterns for various learners, legal/ethical considerations in teaching and the trends in both education and health care that affect educational planning and evaluation. In the practicum, the student is given an opportunity to synthesize previous learning and function in an educator role under the mentorship of select expert preceptors.

Program Admission


Admission Requirements | To be admitted to the Graduate Certificate Program in EMU’s School of Nursing, students must first meet requirements set by the Graduate School.

Applicants are considered for selection into the Graduate Certificate Program upon completion of the following:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Have at least a cumulative 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) college GPA.
  • International students must meet minimum requirements for admission to the Graduate School (International Admissions)
  • All documents above should be submitted directly to the Graduate School Office of Admissions, along with any transcript from other universities or colleges previously attended.

Application Process | Applicants must:

  • Complete an online application for admission. Admission to the university takes an average of 2-3 weeks. The response time from the School of Nursing may be longer depending upon submission date and application deadlines.
  • Submit official transcripts from each educational institution you have attended so your admission application can be processed.
  • Select the program code on your application (NUR/MSN-CTHC).

For those students, pursuing both an MSN degree and this certificate, you will need to submit separate applications for each program. You will also be required to complete separate applications for graduation.
