Exercise Science [BS] - Monroe County Community College Articulation (2019-2022)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs by Program Type

This major is built off of an articulation agreement, a specialized agreement between a four-year university, in this case, Eastern Michigan University, and a community college. Faculty from both schools collaborated to design an agreement that facilitates the smooth transfer of course credit from a two-year associate’s degree program to a four-year bachelor’s degree program.

This agreement is effective Fall 2019 - Summer 2022. Students have until Summer 2027 to graduate from Eastern Michigan University using this agreement.

The Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science program is first focused on teaching students to understand how our organ systems respond to an acute exercise bout and how they adapt to a chronic exercise training program. We then emphasize using this information to help patients/clients improve their health status and/or fitness level. Graduates from our program earn a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science.

Learn

Exercise science is an interdisciplinary field with roots in biology, chemistry, and physics. As a result, our students begin our program by building a strong foundation in these basic science disciplines. Our students then begin their study of how the human body functions normally, and how it responds and adapts to exercise. Exercise science students finish the program by learning how to design evidence-based training programs that progress patients/clients towards health and fitness goals, such as meeting national physical activity recommendations, obtaining physical fitness standards, reducing chronic disease risk, and improving sport performance.

Opportunities

Our program has many classes that take place in the traditional, classroom setting. However, we provide our students with learning opportunities outside the classroom as well. Our practicum and internship courses allow students to earn credit towards the major while gaining practical skills and real-world experience. We also encourage motivated students to engage in research with a faculty mentor. This undergraduate research experience culminates with a student presentation at a state, regional, or national conference.

Exercise Science is a great major for students interested in pursuing advanced study in health- and exercise-related fields. Our majors frequently gain acceptance to academic graduate programs (e.g., exercise physiology and biomechanics programs), medical programs (e.g., medical school and physician assistant programs), and rehabilitative science programs (e.g., physical therapy, orthotics & prosthetics, occupational therapy, and athletic training programs). However, many of our majors opt to enter the workforce upon graduating. Common career paths for these students include cardiac rehabilitation, strength & conditioning coaching, high-performance training, and hospital or worksite wellness coordination.

Student Eligibility

A student’s eligibility to graduate from this major is determined by the following.

  • Apply and be granted admission to Eastern Michigan University (emich.edu/admissions).
  • Apply and be granted admission to their major (See Program Admission for specific information).
  • A completed associate degree, certificate, or adequate coursework. Students eligible to follow an articulation agreement typically transfer 60 credit hours to EMU. Eligible students who transferred in less than 60 credit hours had unique circumstances and were granted permission to follow the articulation agreement, by the Director of Community College Relations (emich.edu/ccr).

Interested students should meet with their community college advisor for information on the articulation agreement before transferring to EMU. After transferring to EMU, a student must consult with the Community College Relations Office to confirm eligibility.

Program Admission

Students entering the exercise science program are listed as “intents” and will be considered for candidacy when the following criteria are met:

  1. Declaration of intent to major in exercise science by going to the UACDC website.
  2. An overall GPA at Eastern Michigan University of 2.80 (transfer GPA evaluated separately).
  3. Completion of all pre-candidacy courses in the Exercise Science Major with a B- or better.

When an “intent” has successfully achieved the above, they must complete the candidacy application, including the application form, and a biographical sketch, and turn this into their advisor.

General Education Requirements:

A student with a Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) endorsement on their transcript only needs to complete the General Education Application Requirements of

To use MTA, a student must have an official community college transcript, with the “MTA Satisfied” endorsement sent to EMU’s Admissions Office. The MTA may be completed after admission to EMU, however, students should inform their advisor or they may be advised to complete additional courses for the general education program.

Students who do not have “MTA Satisfied” on their community college transcript, will be required to satisfy EMU’s general education requirements as applied to transfer students. For specific General Education requirements, see General Education  or view the General Education Worksheet [PDF] .

Major Requirements: 72-73 hours

Once accepted into candidacy, the student must maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA. The student will not be allowed to complete the internship experience (EXSC 480L4 ) if the GPA falls below 2.8. In addition, a grade of B- or better must be attained in all required and elective courses in the exercise science major. If the above are not met, the course(s) in question must be retaken. CPR certification by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association is also required as part of this program.

Pre-candidacy Courses: 18-19 hours

Required Courses: 48 hours

Minor Requirement:

This major does not require a minor.

Program Total:

Students must earn a minimum total of 120 credits at the 100-level or above. If sufficient credits hours are not transferred in, additional EMU credits must be completed to reach the minimum of 120 credit hours required to graduate.

Critical Graduation Information

University Requirements

  • Under this agreement, EMU will waive the 60-hour rule and require that a minimum of 30 credit hours must be completed in EMU courses, with at least 15 hours in the program at the 300-level or above. Of the last 30 hours completed before graduating, a minimum of 10 credit hours must be in courses offered by EMU.
