Rationale for Perspectives on a Diverse World - The course is designed to increase global awareness by systematically examining major world geographic regions and key places, including absolute and relative locations, physical and human characteristics, and interrelationships within the global community. The course explores how culture and experience influence people’s perceptions and regions; encourages awareness and tolerance of other regional cultural realities; explores global patterns and networks of economic, political, and cultural interdependence; and illustrates how cooperation and conflict among people influence the division and control of Earth’s surface; and illustrates balanced regional and global decision-making toward overall human development. The course emphasizes that virtually all geographic areas of the globe are increasingly interrelated in their effects on one another. It emphasizes that to be a tolerant global citizen, one must be aware of the weak and strong points of one’s own cultural, political, and economic realities in the context of global diversity. This course is intended to be the first step in developing lifelong geographic literacy as a prerequisite for global awareness.
