BIO 321 General Microbiology Laboratory

The first three weeks of this laboratory course will be devoted to developing a basic toolbox of microbiology laboratory skills. Such skills as sterile technique, enumeration of microbes, staining, and microscopy will be explored. The remainder of the semester will be devoted to course-based research experiences (CUREs) designed to explore different aspects of microbial growth, microbial ecology, microbial physiology, and microbial diversity. Other areas of microbiology such as bacteriophage biology (i.e., bacterial viruses) may be explored. Both culture-dependent and culture-independent (i.e., molecular) approaches will be used to explore basic microbial concepts.
